The Lasy Rudzkie cycle loop is one of the most appealing cycling routes in Silesia Province, combining excellent forest paths with the fascinating history of the region. This 35-kilometer route winds through the scenic territories of the "Cysterskie Kompozycje Krajobrazowe Rud Wielkich" Landscape Park, offering cyclists an excellent combination of outdoor adventure and cultural heritage discovery. The route begins and ends at the historic former Cistercian monastery and palace complex in Rudy, leading through areas north of Rybnik and around charming villages like Kuźnia Raciborska, Kotlarnia, and Pilchowice.
This relatively new route, established in 2021 as part of a regional participatory budget program, quickly gained recognition as an ideal path for beginner cyclists and families with children. 86% of the route follows car-free forest paths, while the remaining 14% uses quiet side roads with minimal traffic, making it a safe option even for the youngest cyclists.
The route features exceptionally good signage, making cycling intuitive and enjoyable. Direction is indicated by R1-type signs, supported by R3 signs containing information about distances to upcoming attractions and to the loop's completion. Every few kilometers you'll encounter large information boards with route maps and detailed descriptions of local attractions.
Thanks to the thoughtful signage system, there are no issues with choosing the correct direction. Cycling flows smoothly, and riders can focus on admiring the forest's charms and discovering historic sites without worrying about getting lost.
The loop was designed to be completed in the direction indicated by the signage, ensuring optimal sequence for visiting attractions. The route is accessible year-round, but the best time to explore the Lasy Rudzkie is from April to October.
Lasy Rudzkie offers an abundance of places with significant historical sites and natural beauty, which you'll encounter in almost every part of this scenic area.
The route's greatest treasure is the historic monastery and palace complex, whose history dates back to the second half of the 13th century. The Cistercians, who arrived from Jędrzejów in Lesser Poland, built an impressive monastery here, and at the beginning of the 14th century erected a church dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - the oldest Marian sanctuary in Silesia. The monks' resourceful management meant that in a short time they established eight new villages, becoming involved in brewing, beekeeping, and the production of charcoal and tar.
In 1820, the monastery became the seat of the Duke of Racibórz, who transformed it into a magnate residence. After wartime destruction, today's restored complex is owned by the Diocese of Gliwice. In the surrounding park grows the Cistercian Oak - the oldest and most magnificent tree in the park.
Another fascinating attraction is the narrow-gauge railway station, which from the early 20th century connected Gliwice with Racibórz on a 51-kilometer route. The Rudy station was the most important along the entire route - it housed repair workshops, sidings, and a steam locomotive servicing point. At peak times, transport reached one million passengers annually!
Today, a seven-kilometer section from Stanica to Stodoły remains from the original route. The station is listed on the Silesia Province Technical Heritage Trail and offers tours of the locomotive hall and rides on historic trains.
The route features diverse surfaces that make cycling interesting and safe. The route predominantly uses cyclist-friendly dirt roads, most of which are well-maintained and easy to navigate. Particularly attractive are two car-free asphalt sections: Barachowska and Kotlarska roads, considered the best segments of the entire route.
Public asphalt roads constitute only 14% of the route and consist of quiet side roads with minimal traffic. The only slightly more demanding section is the Hubertusowa forest dirt road beyond Paproć, which is uneven and uphill, but represents only a short segment of the entire loop.
The route begins at a large parking area next to the former Cistercian monastery and palace complex in Rudy. Additional parking spaces are available in Brantołka before entering the forest and in Paproć.
The nearest railway stations are in Kuźnia Raciborska (3.5 km from the route start) and Górki Wielkie (5 km from the route), from where you can cycle to the starting point.
Due to the large number of dirt roads, the route is not entirely suitable for bike trailers. A bike with wider tires such as mountain, cross, gravel, or trekking is particularly recommended, as it handles diverse surfaces better.
The route mainly leads through forest, so it's worth bringing water and provisions. Along the route you'll find several rest areas:
The Lasy Rudzkie cycle loop is an excellent choice for anyone seeking an easy yet inspiring route that combines physical activity with discovering regional history. The route is ideal for families with children and beginner cyclists, offering safe cycling through beautiful forest terrain with opportunities to discover fascinating places with rich heritage.
Thanks to excellent signage and diverse attractions, the route provides memorable experiences regardless of cycling experience level. It's worth planning additional time to visit the main attractions, especially the former Cistercian monastery and palace complex and the historic railway station, which are true treasures of Silesian heritage.
