Lesser Poland

Lesser Poland combines mountain terrain, river valleys, historic cities, and forest landscapes into one of Poland's most varied cycling regions. The south is dominated by the Tatras and Beskids with their MTB mountain trails, while the center stretches across foothills and the valleys of the Dunajec, Raba, and Vistula rivers. To the north, the region opens up to the Niepołomice Forest and calmer, lowland terrain. The VeloMałopolska network is gradually connecting the region's major centers — Kraków, Zakopane, Nowy Targ, Tarnów, and Oświęcim — though some sections are still under construction. The region is suitable for cycling year-round, though spring and summer are when the routes are in their best condition and most alive.

The backbone of the regional cycling network is the VeloMałopolska project, a European-standard route network planned since 2013 and developed by the Regional Roads Authority in Kraków. It connects the region's major cities and tourist attractions, creating a cohesive infrastructure accessible to both families with children and experienced cyclists looking for multi-day expeditions.

Cycling Infrastructure

Lesser Poland is steadily expanding its cycling infrastructure through the VeloMałopolska project:

  • a significant portion of the routes runs on dedicated cycle paths, separated from motor traffic
  • self-service repair stations, bike racks, parking areas, and e-bike charging points are available along the routes
  • a well-developed rail network allows bicycle transport — particularly useful in the Tatra, Pieniny, and Beskids areas

Cyclist-Friendly Places

Throughout Lesser Poland, a network of venues holds the Miejsca Przyjazne Rowerzystom (Cyclist-Friendly Places) certification, covering hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, and tourist attractions adapted to serve cyclists. Certified venues offer secure bike storage, access to tools and maps, and in some cases accommodation with luggage handling for cyclists.

Tour Suggestions: Top Routes

Vistula Cycling Route: Lesser Poland Section

The Lesser Poland section of the Vistula Cycling Route is one of the most popular cycling routes in Poland, largely built to EuroVelo standards. The route runs along the Vistula riverbanks through three voivodeships, ultimately connecting the mountains to the sea over a total length of more than 1,200 km. In the Lesser Poland section, the trail passes through nature reserves within the Niepołomice Forest. The route suits riders looking for an easy, relaxed ride across flat terrain.

Velo Dunajec

The route connecting Zakopane with Wietrzychowice, where it meets the Vistula Cycling Route, passes through some of Lesser Poland's most beautiful landscapes. The trail runs through the Pieniny National Park and follows the famous Pieniny Road above the Dunajec Gorge, a stretch of exceptional scenic value. Along the way, cyclists pass the castles at Czorsztyn and Niedzica, the spa towns of Szczawnica and Stary Sącz, Lake Rożnów, and the wooden churches characteristic of southern Lesser Poland's sacred architecture. Most of the route is paved or sealed, though a few short sections require diverting onto gravel roads or crossing into Slovakia. The route is of moderate difficulty, with short but demanding climbs near Falsztyn, Rożnów, and Habalina.

VeloCzorsztyn: By Bike and Boat

The loop around Lake Czorsztyn ranks among the most-visited cycling circuits in Poland. The trip combines newer VeloDunajec sections with a lakeside path and offers a unique opportunity to cross the lake by boat or gondola between Niedzica and Czorsztyn castles, with water transport running from April to November. The route is easy, runs mostly away from motor traffic, and features more than ten rest points along the way. The highlight is the climb toward Falsztyn, where the effort is rewarded with a panoramic view of the lake and the Gorce mountains. Restaurants and shops are available in Kluszkowce, Czorsztyn, Niedzica, and Frydman.

EuroVelo 4: VeloMetropolis

VeloMetropolis is the Lesser Poland section of the EuroVelo 4 route, running through the Vistula valley and its tributaries. It stands out for its scenic views and valuable natural areas, most notably the Niepołomice Forest. The route passes through historically significant sites: the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum in Oświęcim and Brzezinka, and the Wincenty Witos Museum in Wierzchosławice. Part of the route, from the municipality of Brzeszcze to Niepołomice, overlaps with the Vistula Cycling Route, making it easy to plan longer journeys combining both trails.

EuroVelo 11: Muszyna–Stary Sącz Section

This section of the EuroVelo 11 route runs through the Poprad river valley along one of Lesser Poland's most charming border areas. The trail connects the spa town of Muszyna with Stary Sącz, passing through Piwniczna-Zdrój, Żegiestów, and Rytro. A distinctive feature of this stretch is its cross-border character: between Muszyna and Piwniczna, the route crosses the river several times via new pedestrian-cycle bridges, alternating between the Polish and Slovak sides. In Muszyna, the route intersects with VeloKrynica, allowing flexible itinerary planning across the entire Beskid Sądecki region. Stary Sącz, with its preserved medieval urban layout and the Convent of the Poor Clares, is a strong finish to this stretch.

EuroVelo 11: Proszowice–Wiślica Section

This EuroVelo 11 section in northeastern Lesser Poland follows the route of a former narrow-gauge railway for most of its length, well away from motor traffic. The surface is asphalt and sealed, the terrain gently rolling, and the surrounding landscape dominated by vast fields and peaceful villages of the Ponidzie region. The route ends in Wiślica, a place of exceptional historical significance. A 14th-century Gothic collegiate church towers here, while beneath its floor and in the surrounding area, pre-Romanesque remains have been preserved, including the famous slab bearing figures of praying Vistulans, a testament to the earliest history of this settlement. Kazimierza Wielka is worth a stop along the way. The section is relaxed and accessible to cyclists of all ages.

VeloKrynica

VeloKrynica connects the spa of Krynica-Zdrój with Muszyna, running along the valleys of the Kryniczanka and Muszynka streams. The route is separated from motor traffic, fully paved, and features exceptionally gentle gradients, making it accessible to families with children and those just starting out on cycling tours. The route begins in the very center of Krynica, right next to the promenade, and the town is conveniently reachable by train. In Muszyna, the trail connects with EuroVelo 11, opening up a natural corridor for continuing the journey through the Poprad valley.

VeloRaba

VeloRaba runs through the attractive Raba river valley, from the area of Chabówka (near Rabka) all the way to Uście Solne on the Vistula. The route makes extensive use of a former railway embankment and riverside levees, ensuring a flat course through peaceful surroundings. Along the way, several standout attractions await: the Railway Rolling Stock Museum in Chabówka, the spa town of Rabka-Zdrój, Dobczyce Castle with its picturesque reservoir, and further north, the Salt Mine in Bochnia and the Niepołomice Forest. Within the Niepołomice Forest, the route connects with VeloMetropolis (EuroVelo 4). The trail is well served by the railway line, making it easy to plan trips without needing to retrace the same path back.

VeloSkawa

VeloSkawa is one of the most anticipated cycling infrastructure projects in western Lesser Poland. The route runs along the Skawa river valley from Sucha Beskidzka in the south to its junction with the Vistula Cycling Route in the north. Part of the trail follows the trackbed of a disused railway line, meaning that on completed sections cyclists ride over an exceptionally flat surface, shaded by trees and well away from motor traffic. Key attractions along the route include the castle in Sucha Beskidzka, the scenic Lake Mucharskie, and Wadowice, birthplace of Pope John Paul II. The route is still under construction, but completed sections are already rideable and well suited to family outings.

Kanał Łączany

The trail along the Łączany Canal (also known as the Skawina-Łączany Canal) is an excellent option for a family outing near Kraków. The paved cycle path runs along the top of the levee beside a canal built in the 1950s, connecting Skawina with Jaśkowice and continuing toward Łączany. The route is almost entirely separated from motor traffic and flat throughout, with striking lattice steel bridges spanning the canal. The canal is one of the more important winter bird refuges on the upper Vistula, making it an interesting destination for wildlife observers. The trail connects directly with the Vistula Cycling Route and with stations of the Kraków Metropolitan Railway, making it easy to reach from Kraków without a car.

Trail of the Eagles' Nests

The Trail of the Eagles' Nests is one of Poland's most recognizable cycling routes, running from Kraków to Częstochowa through the limestone hills of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland (Jura). Along the way, ten medieval castles and fortresses can be seen, including Ogrodzieniec, Tenczyn, and Bobolice, perched on limestone outcrops amid dense forests. Striking limestone rock formations and several nature reserves define the character of this section. The route is demanding: the varied terrain of the Jura delivers regular climbs, and the surface varies considerably, from asphalt through forest and field tracks to unsurfaced stretches. A bike with wider tyres or a hardtail MTB is recommended.
