If you're an experienced cyclist, you’ll probably enjoy planning your own route. But for beginners, I suggest choosing cities that are spaced at comfortable distances. That way, you can spend part of the day biking and the rest exploring local attractions. My route went through Gdańsk, Tczew, Nowe, Kwidzyn, areas near Tczew, and back to Gdańsk. The daily distances were roughly 54, 66, 65, about 55 and around 60 kilometers. On the Polish side, the route goes through Świnoujście, Międzyzdroje and Wolin. On the German side, it leads through Ahlbeck, Anklam and Ueckermünde. Along the way, you’ll ride past many different waters: the Oder River and its branches near Szczecin, the Świna River in Świnoujście, the Dziwna in Wolin, the Ina near Goleniów, Lake Dąbie - which is the fourth biggest lake in Poland - and the Szczecin Lagoon, shared by Poland and Germany. You’ll also see a bit of the Baltic Sea between Ahlbeck and Międzyzdroje. The views change often - river, lagoon, sea and back again - which makes the ride really interesting. It’s hard to get bored with the scenery. The only part that might feel a bit long is the ride along the dikes by the Lagoon and Lake Dąbie, but even there, the nature is beautiful. But Velo Baltica isn’t just for July and August. It’s also a great pick for a long spring or autumn weekend, or even two regular weekends spread out during the year.
