From the river’s source near the pass down to Chur, cyclists follow the upper course of the Rhine - known as the Vorderrhein or Anterior Rhine - with the dramatic highlight being the ride through the Ruinaulta, often referred to as the Swiss Grand Canyon. After passing through Chur, located in the canton of Graubünden, the Rhine gradually slows and winds through a wide valley until it reaches Lake Constance. From there, the route continues along lively towns on the lake’s southern shore, then past charming Stein am Rhein and the awe-inspiring Rhine Falls - Europe’s largest waterfall - before arriving in Basel. But Velo Baltica isn’t just for July and August. It’s also a great pick for a long spring or autumn weekend, or even two regular weekends spread out during the year. On the Polish side, the route goes through Świnoujście, Międzyzdroje and Wolin. On the German side, it leads through Ahlbeck, Anklam and Ueckermünde. Along the way, you’ll ride past many different waters: the Oder River and its branches near Szczecin, the Świna River in Świnoujście, the Dziwna in Wolin, the Ina near Goleniów, Lake Dąbie - which is the fourth biggest lake in Poland - and the Szczecin Lagoon, shared by Poland and Germany. You’ll also see a bit of the Baltic Sea between Ahlbeck and Międzyzdroje. The views change often - river, lagoon, sea and back again - which makes the ride really interesting. It’s hard to get bored with the scenery. The only part that might feel a bit long is the ride along the dikes by the Lagoon and Lake Dąbie, but even there, the nature is beautiful. This referred to the Ciemińskie Bog - part of the Bagna Izbickie nature reserve located just south of the village of Kluki. The route now runs along the southern shore of Lake Gardno, bypassing the town of Rowy, rather than its former path on the northern side. A similar change was made near Łeba, where the trail now follows the southern edge of Lake Sarbsko. For experienced riders, these changes mark a welcome departure from the previous sections of R10, which were notorious for their sandy, muddy stretches and tangled tree roots - great for adventure, but less so for a smooth ride. The route has also been realigned in and around the Tri-City area and across the Vistula Delta. The daily distances were roughly 54, 66, 65, about 55 and around 60 kilometers. The route combines forests, lakes, rivers, nature reserves and historic towns, while excellent cycling infrastructure and low traffic make travelling by bike exceptionally comfortable. Highlights include the vast forests of Lieberoser Heide, the picturesque Schlaubetal valley, the impressive Niederfinow Ship Lift and the former railway bridge over the Oder River, now transformed into one of Europe's longest cycling bridges. Along the way, the journey passes through places such as Cottbus, Peitz, Beeskow and Oderberg, each adding its own historical and cultural character.
